First published in 1885, H. Rider Haggard’s novel was the first African adventure written in English and immediately enjoyed immense popularity. It spawned a number of sequels in which Haggard used Allan Quatermain, the main protagonist from King Solomon’s Mines.
In Mines, Quatermain is an adventurer based in Durban (South Africa) who is asked to go in search of a fellow adventurer who had disappeared in his own quest to find the legendary King Solomon’s Mines. His acceptance is dependent on a share of the treasures said to be housed there and sparks one of the great stories of darkest Africa.
This copy is a very well preserved 2/6 edition published by Cassell in 1933 in a particularly scarce dustjacket.
