Among other positions, Walter Roth was the first Director of the South Australian School of Mines and, of greater relevance, the Protector of Aboriginals. His was not a bureaucratic appointment as he had spent many years acquiring the trust of the Indigenous people and seeking justice on their behalf.

Our copy of the first edition (1897) of this important anthropological work is in excellent condition, even allowing for the sunning and slight fraying of the front boards. The plates are not foxed to the usual extent (the book having made its way to South Australia’s dry climate many years ago) and include the ethno-pornographic plate.
