Everyone said the steamer Alert was unseaworthy…
Compiled by J. Arbuckle Reid and published by Echo Publishing in Melbourne, this is the rare first Australian edition of Battling With Waves & Lawyers [subtitled: A Genuine History of Perils of the Deep, & an Authentic Record of the Most Important Shipping Case Ever Dealth With in the Supreme Courts of Australasia.
In excellent original condition with numerous advertisements (including on the rear board), the faults lie only in this book’s age rather than treatment – faded lettering on the spine, a couple of trifling page tears & nibbling etc.
The SS Alert went down off the coast of Victoria in 1893 killing 15 of 16 on board (the wreckage lay undisturbed for over 100 years).
A case was brought against the owners of the Alert by relatives of the dead which is dealt with in the largest portion of the book.
A wonderfully scarce piece of legal and Australian maritime history.
